Houndstooth Coffee Now Open on Congress Avenue!

Houndstooth CoffeeThe second Houndstooth Coffee is open for business and it is in the heart of downtown Austin. The newest store on Congress Avenue, at the southwest corner of the Frost Bank Tower, was originally home to Seattle’s Best and later, Texenza. h+uo partner, Randall Owen, along with architect, Kelly Stephenson worked with Houndstooth owner, Sean Henry to infuse the Houndstooth brand on the former coffee shop space.

Keeping in mind Houndstooth’s tagline, “the pattern of coffee and people,” Owen translated the Houndstooth owner’s story of coffee and its processing for the inspiration behind the design, the choice of materials and the color palette. In one example he salvaged the existing pendant lights, with their small red globes, and clustered them to resemble the hanging coffee cherries before they are picked. He then integrated the coffee cherry red and green colors into the interior color scheme.

White-washed and rustic reclaimed oak is the primary natural material on the interior that blends well with the other earthy colors throughout. The warm interior space is complemented with custom wood and steel furniture by local furniture maker Brian Chilton. The experience is extended to the outdoors onto the covered patio with more of the same dark stained wood tables and stools. The new Frost Tower location is truly a prime place for Austinites to make Houndstooth part of their daily routine.
