HausBar Farms, Austin, Texas
Tom Hatch, FAIA and Senior Partner of hatch + ulland owen architects, was approached in 2008 by HausBar Farm owners, Susan Hausman and Dorsey Barger, to help with the design and development of this 1.8 acre site in East Austin. Being a very active organic farmer at Eastside Cafe, Dorsey’s strong desire to turn this fertile piece of East Austin into a completely sustainable urban farm had a major influence on the design concept for the contemporary "farm house."
Meticulously designed, the HausBar Farm includes an extensive outdoor kitchen, a large wraparound porch to view the garden, and a layout that strategically positions the greatest growing area in the front yard. The front of the property includes a guest house, redesigned by h+uo, where Dorsey and Hausman lived during the construction of their new home.
Working with the neighbors throughout the process was integral to the success of the entire development and in transforming the site from a blight space into a beautiful self-sustaining estate.
